GARWAY MEDIEVAL BANQUET-a huge success!

13 th October is an important date for Garway as on this day in 1307, Philip IV of France sent orders for all the Templar Knights in France to be placed under arrest and their goods seized. Edward II of England made his arrests of all the Templars in England, Wales and Scotland on January7th 1308. Jacques de Molay, the Grand Master of the Templars, who visited Garway in 1294, was burnt at the stake outside the Notre Dame in Paris in 1314.

To commemorate this time in our history and to have a good time, knights, damsels, minstrels, monks and vagabonds came to the Tanglewood Great Hall for a banquet on 12 th October, to enjoy a medley of medieval fare. Serving Wenches Georgia and Grace brought out brimming trenchers which varied from pease pottage to pears in honey, from quails eggs to egg custards, from spit roasted old spot pig to trout paste. The Taveners Brown and Whistance kept the mead, ale, cider and wine flowing. Lord and Lady Braid held court and directed proceedings aided by dutiful Heralds Sparey and Atkinson who made sure that the pageant ran smoothly. Ballads sung by Ciemeny, music played by Arcadia, stories told by Troubadours Whitfield and Keenan interspersed the courses. Everyone joined in the singing of a special ballad about the Garway Templars composed especially for the occasion. Preceptor John Hughes proposed the toast to the Templars when timed spilled over into 13 t" October.

Grateful thanks go to the Braid Family for all the hard work and preparation that went into holding this event in their barn and to our talented cooks, Su Hughes, Jan Jenkins, Elaine Robinson, Jo Hurdley, Janet Brown, Lesley Whistance and Caroline Braid. Thanks also to Bill and Isobel Hoare. Our treasurer Ian Jenkins has the job of giving the profit made from this event to local charities. Well done and thank you to the guests who dressed up in such finery depicting the medieval period and to all the willing helpers. Thank you also to Maria from Cross Ash Quarry for loaning the stone candle holders for the evening.
