Reptiles and Amphibians of Garway Hill To encourage the survival of this rare and protected species it is planned to plant some dense hawthorn bushes at one end of the pond in order to give the amphibians cover as they come and go from the water, especially during the breeding season. This is one of the initiatives being promoted by the Garway Hill Commoners Association under its environmental management plans. Small populations of smooth newts and palmate newts are also to be found in the Black Pool. Reptiles recorded on the Hill include the adder and the slow worm.
